taps are the primary tools used for machining internal threads.

They can be classified in various ways, primarily based on structure, application, and machining method.

Material:HSS M2,HSS M35,HSS M42,PM,Tungsten Carbide

Main Classifications of Taps

Classification DimensionMain TypeEnglish NameCharacteristics & Core Applications
By Drive MethodHand TapHand TapOperated manually, typically used with tap wrenches or manual tapping; common in repair work or single-piece production.

Taper TapLong chamfer (approx. 6-8 threads); provides smooth entry and distributes Cutting force; suitable for difficult-to-machine materials or as a starting tap.

Plug TapMedium chamfer (approx. 3-5 threads); the most commonly used type; suitable for both through-holes and blind holes.

Bottoming TapVery short chamfer (approx. 1-1.5 threads); used when threads need to be cut all the way to the bottom of a blind hole, but cannot be used for starting threads.

Machine TapMachine TapUsed on machine tools (e.g., tapping machines, machining centers); demands higher precision and longer tool life.
By Machining PrincipleCutting TapCutting TapForms threads by removing material through cutting; the most common type.

Forming Tap / Roll TapForming Tap / Roll TapForms threads by displacing material through plastic deformation; produces no chips, resulting in stronger threads. Suitable for ductile materials (e.g., aluminum alloys, low-carbon steel).
By Flute ShapeStraight Flute TapStraight Flute TapMost versatile, simple structure, easy to manufacture. Suitable for materials that produce powdery or short chips; can be used for both through-holes and blind holes.

Spiral Flute TapSpiral Flute TapExcellent chip evacuation; chips are pushed backward (toward the shank), making it especially suitable for blind holes. The helix angle is selected based on material: smaller angles (~30°) for ferrous metals, larger angles (~45°) for non-ferrous metals to maintain sharpness.

Spiral Point Tap / Gun TapSpiral Point Tap / Gun TapFeatures a slotted chamfer that pushes chips forward (in the tapping direction), making it ideal for through-holes. Has a larger core diameter for greater strength.
By Application ScenarioThrough-hole TapThrough-hole TapSpecifically refers to taps used for through-holes, such as the Spiral Point Tap.

Blind-hole TapBlind-hole TapSpecifically refers to taps used for blind holes, such as the Spiral Flute Tap.

Nut TapNut TapA longer tap specially designed for cutting threads in nuts on nut-threading machines.

Pipe TapPipe TapUsed for machining pipe threads.

Special

Trapezoidal tap Trapezoidal tap A specialized cutting tool designed for machining internal trapezoidal threads. Its core function is to efficiently cut trapezoidal threaded holes in workpieces, primarily used in applications requiring transmission of power, motion, and displacement in mechanical systems, mostly supplied in sets (2 to 5 pieces),typically used for threads with nominal diameters below 50mm and pitches below 6mm (most commonly for sizes up to Tr30×6)
