Classification and Applications of Threading Dies

I. Classification by Shape and Application

TypeSize RangeFeaturesTypical Applications
Round Die (Circular Die)M0.25 ~ M68mmMost widely used; mounted in a die stock for hand use or on machines. Divided into solid type (good rigidity, suitable for heavy Cutting) and adjustable type (with adjustment slots for fine-tuning thread pitch diameter to compensate for wear or correct dimensions).General thread cutting, such as on bolts and threaded rods.
Square/Hexagon DieNo national standard; sizes varySquare or hexagonal shape, driven directly by a wrench without a die stock. Less common in the market; sometimes modified from round dies.Tight spaces where a standard die stock cannot fit, such as on machine anchor bolts.
Pipe DieCorresponding pipe thread sizesSpecifically designed for pipe thread machining, often of segmented construction for easy mounting.Used with pipe threading machines (power threaders) for cutting threads on water pipes and gas pipes.

II. Classification by Thread Standard

CategoryThread TypeThread AngleCommon Applications
Metric DieMetric standard thread (M)60°Mechanical fasteners, e.g., M10×1.5 bolts.
BSPT DieBritish Standard Pipe taper thread55°Water and gas pipelines; commonly used in the UK and Commonwealth countries.
NPT DieNational Pipe Taper thread (US standard)60°US standard pipe threads; used in petroleum and chemical pipelines.

III. Classification by Material

MaterialHardness & Wear ResistanceSuitable Workpiece MaterialsTypical Applications
Tool Steel (Alloy Tool Steel)ModerateMild steel, copper, aluminum, and other conventional materialsGeneral machining, maintenance, DIY
High-Speed Steel (HSS / HSSE)High, with good heat resistanceStainless steel, heat-resistant steels, and other difficult-to-machine materialsProfessional machining, batch production
Carbide (Cemented Carbide)Extremely high, with long tool lifeHardened steel, cast iron, and other hard materialsHigh-speed cutting, high-volume/high-precision production

IV. Main Application Scenarios

Application MethodTools UsedFeaturesTypical Settings
Hand Thread CuttingDie stock + round dieFlexible operation, suitable for small batches; requires reverse rotation every few turns for chip breaking; use with cutting oil.Repair workshops, on-site installation, DIY workshops
Machine Thread CuttingLathe/drilling machine + die holderHigher efficiency than hand cutting, with controllable precision; suitable for medium batch production.Machine shops, batch part production
Pipe Threading (Power Threader)Power threader + pipe dieFast and labor-saving; specifically designed for pipe-end thread cutting; a core tool in pipeline installation.Pipeline installation, construction sites, plumbing repair
Thread Repair / CleaningDie (used as a chaser)Used to clean or repair damaged external threads; also called a "thread restoring die."Equipment maintenance, reconditioning of old parts
