Classification of High-Speed Steel (HSS) Twist drill Bits

HSS twist drill bits can be classified from multiple dimensions, with the most critical ones being material grade, shank type, manufacturing process, and length specification.

The main classification methods are summarized in the table below for easy reference:

Classification DimensionMain CategoryKey Features and Applications
Material GradeGeneral-Purpose HSS(HSS4241,4341, 6542)The most common and basic material. Offers good toughness and low cost, suitable for drilling mild steel, aluminum, wood, plastics, and other conventional materials. Common grades include 4241,4341, 6542 (W6Mo5Cr4V2), listed in ascending order of performance.

Cobalt HSS (HSS-Co / HSSE)

(HSS Co5%,HSS Co8%)

Contains 5–8% cobalt (e.g., M35, M42). Offers significantly higher hardness and heat resistance, specially designed for drilling stainless steel, titanium alloys, heat-resistant steels, and other difficult-to-machine materials.

Powder Metallurgy HSS (HSS-PM)Manufactured using powder metallurgy technology, with extremely fine and uniformly distributed carbide particles. Overall performance (hardness, toughness, wear resistance) far exceeds that of conventional HSS. A premium-grade material used for high-demand precision machining.
Coating TypeBright (Uncoated)Surface is not coated. Lowest cost, suitable for general drilling of soft materials.

TiN Coating (Titanium Nitride)Gold-colored, offers high hardness and wear resistance, effectively extending tool life to approximately 2.5 times that of uncoated drills. The most widely used coating.

Other CoatingsSuch as TiAlN, TiCN, etc., offering better performance for specific machining conditions (e.g., dry Cutting, high-speed machining).
Manufacturing ProcessRolled (Roll-forged)Manufactured through a die-rolling process. Lower cost and economical, suitable for general-purpose applications.

Ground (Fully Ground)Flutes and cutting edges are precision-ground, offering excellent surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Provides smooth chip evacuation and longer tool life. Higher quality.
Shank TypeStraight Shank(DIN338,ANSI B94,DIN1869,DIN340,DIN1897)The most common type, held by drill chucks. Suitable for small-diameter drill bits. Sub-types include cylindrical straight shank and three-flat shank (with three flats for more secure clamping).

taper Shank(DIN341,DIN345)Connects directly to the machine spindle via a Morse taper, transmitting higher torque. Suitable for large-diameter drill bits.

Threaded Shank(NAS965)

(1/4"-28 UNF)

The NAS965 threaded shank drill bit is a specialized drill bit manufactured in accordance with National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 965. Its core purpose is to perform drilling operations in confined or tight spaces where standard drill chucks cannot fit, and it is particularly widely used in aircraft assembly and maintenance.

Reduced Shank(DIN341,DIN345)The shank diameter – typically the standard 1/2 inch (approx. 12.7mm) or 3/8 inch(9.5mm)

Hex Shank1/4-inch hex shank, can be used directly in quick-change chucks of electric screwdrivers / impact drills for easy bit changes.
Length Specification

Standard, Short, Long, Extra-Long, and Ultra-Long(DIN338,ANSI B94,DIN1869,DIN340,DIN1897)

Selected based on drilling depth requirements. Longer lengths impose higher demands on rigidity and chip evacuation.
Drill Point Angle118°Standard general-purpose angle, suitable for drilling most steel materials.
different drill point.png135°Split Point design, featuring automatic self-centering to effectively prevent walking and shifting when starting the hole. Suitable for high-strength materials such as stainless steel, or applications requiring high positioning accuracy.
