 Main Classifications of Knurling Tools

Basically it has two main types:

• Straight knurling: Creates straight grooves parallel to the workpiece axis. Suitable for directional push-pull and precise adjustment applications, such as focusing rings on optical instruments and micrometer thimbles.

• Diamond (cross) knurling: Formed by intersecting left- and right-hand diagonal lines to create a diamond grid pattern. It provides greater friction, making it ideal for applications that need to withstand high torque or prevent slipping, such as barbell bars and wrench handles. Based on the raised or recessed nature of the pattern, it can be further divided into convex and concave diamond knurls.

Pattern coarseness is determined by the module (m) , with common specifications ranging from 0.2, 0.3, 0.4... up to 2.0.
